LA TONNARA

 

Favignana island's 'tonnara' has been closed for 8 years now, after a bankruptcy due to speculation of shameless private investors. It was known as "La Regina del Mare" -the queen of the sea- for its incredible amount of tuna fished every year.  This millenary and sustainable tuna fishing technique, which knowledge has been transmitted from the Phoenicians to the Arabs and then to the sicilian fishermen more than a thousand years ago, is now risking to disappear forever. But something is finally happening:  for the first time the fishermen touch again the nets -they are hoping that next year their work could finally start again.
